Pablo Picasso saw paintings as a weapon. I relate to that. I painted with oils often during my five-year long divorce. It was 'angry painting', a less-well known cousin of angry sex. Painting gave me a way of channeling my despair at the injustice of being a male parent in the UK's civil courts. My paintings were dark and ugly, because they reflected despair and injustice. My life has moved on, but in many instances aspects of my art remain dark and ugly, in part because life itself can be dark and ugly.
While art may be subjective, objectively, I'm a life-long believer in ideas, concepts and messages as core content for art. And, while I believe there's a place for pretty pictures, I tend to focus on an idea or message in my work.
I believe that ideas have a time and place, so if something presents as a failure today, it could simply be that its time hasn't come yet. I often think of the tragic example of Vincent van Gogh being a failure within the confines of his lifespan.
Ideally, I'd like my art to speak for itself, but for the moment I tend to offer some commentary - because today, ppl are often too busy to reflect and contemplate.
